Chopp-a-Cake’s Story / BUILD Metro DC

BUILD Metro DC is a four year in-school and out-of-school time program that engages high school students from under-resourced communities through entrepreneurship training, and college and career readiness. In partnership with DCPS and charter schools, BUILD serves 300 students at seven high schools in the District of Columbia this school year. BUILD operates school-based business incubators, in which more than 40 student business teams launch and run their very own startups.

Each year, BUILD 9th grade entrepreneurs present their businesses at the biggest BUILD event of the year – the annual Business Plan Competition. This year’s competition, One Night. One BUILD, taking place Tuesday, May 23 at the Hyatt Regency Washington, will give BUILD students the opportunity to put their Spark Skills to the test – 21st century skills that will propel their success in high school, college and career. Last year’s business plan competition winners, The SEED School of DC’s Chopp-a-Cake, created a kitchen tool designed to cut a sheet cake into equal slices with one motion. To see which student business team will win this year, visit to learn how you can attend One Night. One BUILD.
